About

Welcome to Travel Blog News where I will share with you my own travel tips, plus information about places I’ve visited, near and far, and people I’ve had the pleasure of meeting along “the road less traveled.”

My fun and exciting career as a travel video producer has taken me to many interesting places and has allowed me to experience life from a different perspective. Lugging piles of equipment on planes and through airport customs can be hectic at times and when on location, directing a shoot during the day and working on the script and shot list at night, doesn’t leave much time for sightseeing even though the shoots themselves allow me to see and experience places off the beaten path. However, being a gypsy at heart, I enjoy every aspect of traveling– jetting off to places unknown, meeting new friends, eating exotic foods and the best part, getting paid to do it.

Wanderlust was instilled in me from early childhood when my artist grandfather (painter and sculpture, Mark Mayhew) told me tales about his travels– about the time he sailed to Africa from Martha’s Vineyard when he was just a teenager– and then later, when he returned to Africa on a painting safari and to collect ivory and stone for his sculptures (I know, but things were much different then). Grandpa used to sing to me in Portuguese (an acquired language) and taught me how to create art using charcoal, pastels and oil paint. We enjoyed several weekend trips to Joshua Tree where we collected rocks and shot rifles and listened to the coyotes howl at night. Grandpa painted the desert landscape while I caught lizards and looked for discarded snake skins, animal bones and more rocks. Now, whenever I take my camera to Joshua Tree, I feel nostalgic as I try to recapture through the lens what I experienced as a child with my grandfather. I look for familiar rock formations and scenes from his landscape paintings.

Grandpa Mayhew’s first wife, my grandmother, Olive Kelly, was born in Ireland and came to the United States when she was a young woman. I had the opportunity of visiting Ireland a few years ago on a photography trip with my friend, New York fine arts photographer, Bill Jorden,  now deceased. Having little information to go on, but thanks to the help of a County Mayo innkeeper, I was able to find the home where my grandmother was born. It was a very emotional and spiritual moment for me– to know that I was standing on the very spot where she had probably stood many years ago. Bill Jorden captured that magical moment, but unfortunately he passed away before I was able to see the photograph. You can read a short bio on Bill at http://www.nearbycafe.com/foodandtravel/motion/vol1no1/jorden.html
